Allein in New York City leben schätzungsweise 920.000 Menschen mit einer Behinderung. Das NYU College of Dentistry hat am 18. April eine Klinik eröffnet, die sich auf die besonderen Bedürfnisse dieser Patienten spezialisiert hat.
Die zahnärztliche Versorgung kann für Patienten mit Behinderungen oftmals eine Herausforderung darstellen, da nicht alle Ärzte über das nötige Fachwissen verfügen oder mit der erforderlichen Infrastruktur ausgestattet sind. Patienten mit Behinderungen, die auf eine Betäubung angewiesen sind, werden zur Zahnbehandlung oftmals in ein Krankenhaus eingewiesen, wobei sie mit Wartezeiten von bis zu sechs Monaten rechnen müssen. Fast 100.000 New Yorker benötigen einen Rollstuhl, doch die Versorgung dieser Patienten scheitert in vielen Zahnarztpraxen schon an einem barrierefreien Zugang.
Den Mangel an Optionen erleben viele Betroffene und deren Angehörige als starke Einschränkung. Um diesem dringenden Bedarf gerecht zu werden, hatte das NYU College of Dentistry die Idee, ein neues Praxiskonzept zu entwickeln, das sich speziell an Patienten mit Behinderungen im Großraum New York richtet.

Eine Klinik, die aus Zusammenarbeit entstanden ist
Das NYU Dentistry Oral Health Center for People with Disabilities (Mundgesundheitszentrum für Menschen mit Behinderung der zahnmedizinischen Fakultät der New York University) liegt in Manhattan, mit Blick auf das Empire State Building, und verfügt über neun speziell ausgestattete Behandlungsräume. Zwei davon sind Operationssäle, die von Anästhesisten betreut werden. Dadurch wird die Überweisungsrate in Krankenhäuser reduziert. Bereits im ersten Jahr soll die 743 Quadratmeter große Anlage 8.000 Patientenbesuche ermöglichen, im darauffolgenden Jahr sollen bereits Kapazitäten für 10.000 Patienten zur Verfügung stehen.
Um den Patienten bei der Bewältigung potenzieller Ängste zu helfen, wird derzeit ein Raum entwickelt, der alle Sinne ansprechen, Stress abbauen und den Wohlfühlfaktor erhöhen soll. Beteiligt ist ein Team des NYU Ability Project, in dem Ingenieure, Designer, Pädagogen, Künstler, Ergo- und Physiotherapeuten sowie Sprachpathologen die Möglichkeiten zur Anpassung von Technologien an die Bedürfnisse von Menschen mit Behinderung erforschen und entwickeln. Bereits die Planung der neuen Einrichtung wurde unter der Leitung des NYU Ability Projekt-Teams als Gemeinschaftsprojekt organisiert, an dem sowohl Interessengruppen aus dem Gesundheitswesen als auch Fokusgruppen von Patienten mit Behinderungen teilnahmen.
Partnerschaft für mehr Zufriedenheit bei den Patienten
Dentsply Sirona pflegt eine langjährige Partnerschaft mit der NYU Dentistry. Melissa Marlin, Executive Sales Account Manager, Institutional Accounts, sprach sich gegenüber dem NYU-Management für eine ganzheitliche Lösung aus, die zwei barrierefreie Behandlungseinheiten sowie einen Rollstuhlkipper miteinschließt.
Ich war da und half, als der erste Patient den Rollstuhlkipper nutzte. Es war ein gelähmter Veteran. Die spezielle Ausrüstung, die wir der Klinik zur Verfügung stellten, verschaffte ihm die Möglichkeit einer Behandlung in Würde, wie sie jeder Patient verdient. Ich bin stolz darauf, für ein Unternehmen zu arbeiten, das so etwas möglich macht, denn auf Patienten mit speziellen Bedürfnissen wird viel zu wenig eingegangen. Die Klinik hilft dabei, das Problem öffentlich zu machen.“
Der Prozess war von klassischen New Yorker Bedingungen geprägt: Die Anlieferung der Produkte war eine immense logistische Herausforderung, und als das Projektteam aus Deutschland ankam, um sein Fachwissen für die Fertigstellung des Projekts zu teilen, gab ihnen die New Yorker Gewerkschaft nur drei Tage Zeit, um das zu erreichen, was normalerweise acht Tage in Anspruch nehmen würde. Das Dentsply Sirona Team schaffte es letzten Endes jedoch sogar in zweieinhalb Tagen.
Das Kooperationsprojekt hat bei wichtigen Zeitungen wie der New York Times für große Aufmerksamkeit gesorgt und gilt als Paradebeispiel für eine Klinik, die zahnmedizinische Behandlungen speziell für Patienten mit Behinderung anbietet.
