Ein Lächeln das Leben verändert
Nicole Hieronymus aus Hanau war als Zahntechnikerin ehrenamtlich in Uganda unterwegs.
Sie schenken ein Lächeln: Dentsply Sirona unterstützt das Freiwilligenprogramm der kanadischen Build Your Smile Dental Foundation in Uganda. Die Stiftung ermöglicht Menschen vor Ort kostenlos Zugang zu zahnmedizinischer Versorgung.
In diesem Jahr war mit Nicole Hieronymus, Global Senior Manager Clinical Affairs, aus Hanau erstmals auch eine Mitarbeiterin von Dentsply Sirona dabei. Ende Januar flog die Zahntechnikerin für rund zwei Wochen nach Uganda. Gemeinsam mit 18 weiteren Freiwilligen reiste sie durch das Land. Kirchen, Schulhäuser und Klassenzimmer dienten als behelfsmäßige Zahnarztpraxen und Labore.
Im Gepäck hatte das Team unter anderem Kunststoffzähne in verschiedenen Größen und drei Zahnfarben, drei Triad-Lichthärtegeräte, lichthärtenden Prothesenkunststoff, Labormaterialien und Präventionszubehör. Ein großer Teil der Materialien und Geräte spendete Dentsply Sirona. Nicole Hieronymus war als einzige ausgebildete Zahntechnikermeisterin des Freiwilligen-Teams, dem außerdem ugandische Zahnärzte und Studenten angehörten, für die Prothesenfertigung zuständig.
Zahnersatz innerhalb eines Tages gefertigt
Pro Tag wurden 80 bis 140 Zähne gezogen und 18 bis 25 Prothesen hergestellt. „Wir haben als Team so gut zusammengearbeitet, dass wir einer maximalen Zahl von Patienten helfen konnten“, erzählt Nicole Hieronymus. „Die Materialien für die Prothesenfertigung lassen sich unkompliziert und zeitsparend verarbeiten. So konnten auch die Zahnärzte und Studenten nach einer kurzen Einweisung direkt bei der Prothesenfertigung unterstützen. Dank des Lichthärtegeräts war es möglich, ein sehr schnelles Verfahren anzuwenden und so in kürzester Zeit sehr viele Prothesen zu fertigen. Es war schön zu sehen, wie sich unsere Materialien und Geräte im Härtetest bewährt haben.“
Hunderte von Patienten behandelt
Der Bedarf war groß. „Unser Einsatz hat uns in sehr abgelegene Gebiete geführt. Dort haben die Menschen keinen Zugang zu zahnärztlicher Versorgung. Deshalb reisen hunderte von Patienten schon Tage vorher an und stehen Schlange, um behandelt zu werden – vom Kleinkind bis zum Senior.“ Strom erzeugte ein portabler Generator, zum Anrühren des Abdruckmaterials und des Gipses wurde mitgebrachtes Trinkwasser verwendet. „Die Arbeit war oft eine Herausforderung, da die Arbeitsplätze ja improvisiert waren. Oft saßen wir auf Kirchenbänken, als Lichtquelle dienten Stirnlampen.“ Die schönste Erfahrung für Nicole Hieronymus: Die Freude der Patienten über ihr neues Lächeln. „Es hat mich sehr berührt, wie glücklich wir die Menschen gemacht haben, deren Leben sich durch den Zahnersatz so sehr zum Positiven verändert hat.“ Nicole Hieronymus will sich auch weiterhin für die Stiftung engagieren. „Ich fand es großartig, wie sehr Dentsply Sirona mich und das Projekt von Anfang an unterstützt hat. Ich würde jederzeit wieder an so einem Einsatz teilnehmen. Man kann etwas zurückgeben und Menschen direkt helfen.“
