The 2019 Global Wellness Program’s third quarter was dedicated to promoting “Physical Health & Wellness” for employees. This update features some fitness tips and shares examples of fitness initiatives from different locations.
According to both the US Department of Health and Human Services and the UK’s National Health Service, doing at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity (or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity) spread out across the week combined with strength training exercises twice a week can significantly lower the risk of many major illnesses. Exercise is proven to stimulate the brain in ways that improve mood and promote better sleep. It’s also a great opportunity to meet new people or spend time with friends and colleagues.

Earlier this year, Spotlight noted that by some estimates, people spend an average of 90,000 hours at work throughout their lives. Whether that work is physical or spent behind a desk, it has an impact on health. As technology has made many tasks easier, people have become more sedentary overall. That’s why it’s even more important to make a concerted effort to exercise regularly. Employees can do some simple things during the workday, such as avoiding sitting for more than one hour at a time and taking a miniexercise break for one or two minutes each hour. Even seemingly small things like choosing the stairs rather than taking the elevator, parking far from an entrance in the parking lot, or taking a walk during the lunch break will have benefits.
For the Global Wellness Program, the Company shared Capital BlueCross’ Swim, Stride, and Spin program as a guide for improving fitness. In addition to the Swim, Stride, and Spin fitness program, colleagues around the world participated in their own local initiatives. Here are a few examples.
Ping-Pong and Soccer in Brazil
In order to improve quality of life and overall health, the Brazil colleagues participated in a number of competitive activities in 2019 that stimulate not only movement but also promote healthy habits. Colleagues competed in ping-pong and both indoor and outdoor soccer.
These games are in partnership with SESI - Serviço Social da Indústria (Social Services of Industry) – so about 30 companies from the region participate. In 2018 Dentsply Sirona was the champion and this year we are close to being two-time champions. The health of our employees is the number one priority!
Colleagues in India bond over corporate cricket matches
The game of cricket is the heartbeat of India. The spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork are best learned during a cricket match. Colleagues from Dentsply Sirona India decided to bond over friendly cricket matches every Saturday and soon they began playing in corporate matches. The team won three consecutive matches last month and the effort made them a stronger, more collaborative team at the office as well.
Their dedication towards fitness and building team spirit is impressive. Best of luck for all of the team’s future matches.
