Partenariat avec NYU Dentistry pour soigner les patients handicapés
On estime qu’à New York, 920 000 personnes ont un handicap. Pour répondre à leurs besoins, NYU College of Dentistry a créé un établissement qui a ouvert ses portes le 18 avril. Obtenir des soins dentaires peut être un défi pour les patients handicapés, car tous les cliniciens ne disposent pas de la formation ou des installations nécessaires. Les patients handicapés finissent souvent par se rendre à l'hôpital pour des soins dentaires à cause du besoin de sédation. Il en résulte un délai d'attente pouvant aller jusqu'à six mois.
En outre, près de 100 000 New-Yorkais utilisent un fauteuil roulant et, parmi les nombreux autres obstacles aux soins, tous les cabinets de dentistes ne sont pas accessibles en fauteuil roulant. Le manque d'options a laissé de nombreuses personnes et leurs familles frustrées. Afin de répondre à ce besoin critique, NYU College of Dentistry a eu l’idée de construire un nouvel établissement spécialement conçu pour les patients handicapés de la région de New York.

Une installation développée en co-création
Situé juste au nord-ouest du Peter Cooper Village à Manhattan et offrant une vue sur l'Empire State Building, le centre de santé bucco-dentaire pour personnes handicapées de l'Université de New York possède neuf salles de traitement spécialement aménagées et deux salles de sédation supervisées par des anesthésistes. L'installation de 750m² vise à recevoir 8 000 patients au cours de sa première année, puis à augmenter la capacité d'accueil à 10 000 visites d'ici la deuxième année.
Pour aider les patients à faire face à une anxiété potentielle, une salle multisensorielle est en cours de développement afin de réduire le stress et d'accroître le confort. Une équipe d'ingénieurs, de concepteurs, d'éducateurs, d'artistes, de physiothérapeutes et d'ergothérapeutes, ainsi que d'orthophonistes travaillant au carrefour du handicap et de la technologie issue du NYU Ability Project est impliquée. Il est important de noter que la création de la nouvelle installation était une collaboration entre des groupes de défense des soins de santé, ainsi que des groupes de discussion de patients handicapés conduits par l’équipe du projet Ability.
Partenariat pour répondre aux besoins des patients
Dentsply Sirona entretient un partenariat de longue date avec NYU Dentistry. Melissa Marlin, Executive Sales Account Manager, Institutional Accounts, a expliqué à la direction de la NYU que Dentsply Sirona et ses partenaires pourraient fournir une solution complète pour équiper la nouvelle clinique de tous ses besoins, notamment de deux centres de traitement et d'un basculeur pour fauteuils roulants.
J'étais là pour aider le premier patient à utiliser ce système à son rendez-vous. Il s’agissait d’un ancien combattant paralysé et l’équipement spécial que nous avons pu fournir à la clinique lui donnait la dignité que chaque patient mérite lorsqu’il est soigné. Je suis tellement fier de travailler pour une entreprise capable de rendre possible une telle chose. Les patients ayant des besoins spéciaux sont trop souvent cachés et cette clinique aide à résoudre ces problèmes.
Le projet comportait des défis classiques à New York: le déchargement de l'équipement dans le bâtiment était un cauchemar logistique et lorsque l'équipe est venue d'Allemagne pour apporter son expertise afin de mener à bien le projet, un syndicat de la ville de New York ne leur donnait que trois jours pour accomplir ce qui aurait normalement dû être réalisé en huit. L'équipe Dentsply Sirona a terminé en 2,5 jours.
La collaboration a attiré beaucoup d’attention de la part des principaux médias, dont le NY Times, et la clinique servira d’exemple à d’autres.
