El equipo de Wellspect está en proceso de implementar Lean Product Development (LPD) en toda la organización. Este artículo explica los principios de Lean, su historia y cómo están trabajando con él los empleados.
Los métodos Lean se han usado en Wellspect por años en la producción y recientemente en R&D. En 2018, se decidió capacitar a los empleados de todas las áreas sobre Lean para el desarrollo de productos, a fin de reforzar la capacidad de lanzar nuevos productos rápidamente y últimamente, alcanzar un promedio de 1.5 nuevos productos al año.
Lean es una filosofía que aspira a maximizar el valor del cliente - desarrollar los productos adecuados que creen una diferencia genuina - al mismo tiempo que reduce el desperdicio de recursos usados a través de mejoras continuas. Lean tiene sus orígenes en la fabricación. La Toyota Motor Corporation adaptó conceptos de la línea de producción de Ford a su propio Sistema de Producción Toyota, cambiando el enfoque de usar máquinas individuales al flujo del producto durante todo el proceso.

El enfoque de Dentsply Sirona en la mejora de flujos de trabajo para los clientes se basa en la filosofía Lean. El término en sí mismo fue inventado por MIT‘s International Motor Vehicle Program a finales de 1980. Las herramientas y principios Lean son aplicables más allá de la fabricación y se han aplicado a áreas de negocio en muchas industrias.
La filosofía de Lean Product Development incluye tres componentes: mentalidad, estructura y herramientas. La mentalidad se basa en la orientación al cliente, el intercambio de conocimientos, pensar en las formas de reducir los residuos y el replanteamiento de procesos para mejorarlos. La estructura, que divide los proyectos en paquetes de trabajo, tiene como objetivo crear flujos de trabajo que apoyen esta mentalidad. Wellspect usa herramientas como el análisis de las lagunas de conocimiento y la planeación visual en las tablas, así como el llamado Scrum framework, que ayuda a los equipos a trabajar juntos.
Trabajar con métodos Lean nos ha ayudado a identificar falta de conocimiento en etapa temprana del desarrollo del producto. Así, podemos planear con antelación, llenar cualquier déficit y avanzar rápidamente. Uno de los éxitos más recientes en el uso de Lean fue involucrar frecuentemente a los usuarios en etapa temprana en el desarrollo del empaque para el recién lanzado LoFric Elle, el primer catéter con mango del mundo, diseñado para mujeres. El resultado fue un empaque más fácil de usar.
Se hace hincapié en la formación de equipos para usar el proceso A3, llamado así por las hojas de papel de tamaño A3 en las que se comunican los conocimientos críticos. Incluso han tenido varios "A3-vernissages" para ayudar a compartir conocimientos y están publicando un iLean Newsletter que resume los avances recientes, destacando las aplicaciones exitosas de Lean junto con explicaciones y entrevistas sobre el razonamiento subyacente para el cambio en los procesos de trabajo.
Wellspect presentó el iLean Award, cuyo objetivo es fomentar los principios básicos de Lean de compartir conocimientos, colaboración y planeación dinámica, reconociendo a los empleados que se desafían a explorar y usar nuevas formas de trabajo, a adoptar un enfoque proactivo de los problemas, a trabajar en equipo o a lograr resultados positivos mediante el uso de las herramientas Lean. Los ganadores del iLean Award se anunciarán cada trimestre hasta finales de 2020. Cualquier empleado dentro de Wellspect puede ser nominado. El primer premio fue para Anna-Siri Andersson por su habilidad para cumplir tareas de una manera que minimiza el riesgo de problemas de último minuto al adoptar métodos Lean.
