Asociados con NYU Dentistry para ayudar a pacientes discapacitados
Se estima que sólo en la ciudad de Nueva York, 920,000 personas tienen algún tipo de discapacidad. Para ayudar con sus necesidades, la Facultad de Odontología de NYU inauguró un centro el 18 de abril. Recibir atención dental puede ser un reto para pacientes con discapacidad, pues no todos los médicos cuentan con la capacitación o las instalaciones necesarias. Los pacientes con discapacidad terminan yendo a hospitales debido a la necesidad de sedación. El resultado de esto es tener que esperar hasta seis meses para una cita para ser visto en una sala de cirugía.
Además, casi 100,000 neoyorquinos usan silla de ruedas y entre otros obstáculos para recibir atención, no todos los consultorios dentales son accesibles para sillas de ruedas. La falta de opciones ha dejado a muchas personas y sus familias frustradas. Para abordar esta necesidad crítica, el NYU College of Dentistry tuvo la idea de construir una instalación diseñada para pacientes con discapacidad en el área metropolitana de Nueva York.

Una instalación diseñada a través de la co-creación
Ubicado al noroeste de Peter Cooper Village en Manhattan, con vistas al Empire State Building, el NYU Dentistry Oral Health Center for People with Disabilities cuenta con nueve salas de tratamiento equipadas y dos salas de sedación a cargo de anestesiólogos, reduciendo la necesidad de enviar a los pacientes a hospitales. La instalación de 8,000 pies cuadrados tiene como objetivo recibir 8,000 visitas el primer año y luego aumentar la capacidad a 10,000 visitas para el segundo año.
Para ayudar a los pacientes a enfrentar la ansiedad, se está creando una sala multisensorial destinada a reducir el estrés y aumentar la comodidad. Un equipo de ingenieros, diseñadores, educadores, artistas, terapeutas ocupacionales y físicos, así como patólogos del habla y lenguaje trabajan en el enlace de la discapacidad y la tecnología del NYU Ability Project. Hay que destacar que la planeación de la nueva instalación fue un esfuerzo conjunto que incluyó grupos de defensa de la salud, y grupos focales de pacientes con discapacidad dirigidos por el equipo de Ability Project.
Trabajando para satisfacer las necesidades de los pacientes
Dentsply Sirona tiene una larga relación con NYU Dentistry. Melissa Marlin, Executive Sales Account Manager, Institutional Accounts, explicó a la gerencia de la NYU que Dentsply Sirona y sus socios podrían ofrecer una solución completa para equipar la nueva clínica con todas sus necesidades, incluyendo dos centros de tratamiento bariátrico y un volquete para sillas de ruedas.
Yo estaba ahí cuando el primer paciente que usó el volquete tuvo su cita. Resultó ser un veterano paralizado y el equipo especial que entregamos para la clínica le dio la dignidad que todo paciente merece cuando es tratado. Estoy muy orgullosa de trabajar para una compañía capaz de hacer posible algo así. Los pacientes con necesidades especiales se esconden frecuentemente y esta clínica está ayudando a sacar a la luz estos problemas.
El proceso tuvo desafíos clásicos de Nueva York: descargar el equipo en el edificio fue una pesadilla logística y cuando el equipo experimentado que llegó de Alemania para terminar el proyecto, un sindicato de la ciudad de Nueva York les dio sólo tres días para lograr lo que usualmente tomaría ocho. El equipo de Dentsply Sirona terminó en 2.5.
El trabajo creo una gran atención por parte de los principales medios de comunicación, incluyendo el NY Times y la clínica será ejemplo para otros que ofrecen atención dental a los pacientes con discapacidad.
